Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tbsp baking powder
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1/3 cup sugar or honey
  • Approximately 4 cups milk
  • Cooking oil for deep frying

Instructions:

  1. Preheat a large deep pan with enough cooking oil for deep frying.
  2. In a big bowl, combine:
    • 4 cups all-purpose flour
    • 3 tbsp baking powder
    • 2 tsp salt
    • 1/3 cup sugar or honey
  3. Add approximately 4 cups of milk to the dry ingredients. Mix thoroughly until the dough reaches a sticky consistency. If too dry, gradually add more milk until the right texture is achieved.
  4. Place the dough on a floured surface. Gently roll it around until completely covered with flour.
  5. Pinch off biscuit-sized pieces, lightly press with fingers on the floured surface, and gently flatten. Use your index finger to poke a hole in the center.
  6. Once all pieces are prepared, carefully place 2 or 3 in the hot oil. When you observe the edges turning golden, flip and fry until the other side achieves a similar golden hue.
  7. Drain the fried bread on paper towels.
  8. Your Mama's Kiowa Indian Frybread is now ready to be enjoyed!

Tips:

  • Embrace the tradition of eyeballing measurements, adjusting ingredients until you achieve the desired consistency.
  • Serve the frybread warm and fresh for the best flavor.
