Mama's Kiowa Indian Frybread
Ingredients:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 3 tbsp baking powder
- 2 tsp salt
- 1/3 cup sugar or honey
- Approximately 4 cups milk
- Cooking oil for deep frying
Instructions:
- Preheat a large deep pan with enough cooking oil for deep frying.
- In a big bowl, combine:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 3 tbsp baking powder
- 2 tsp salt
- 1/3 cup sugar or honey
- Add approximately 4 cups of milk to the dry ingredients. Mix thoroughly until the dough reaches a sticky consistency. If too dry, gradually add more milk until the right texture is achieved.
- Place the dough on a floured surface. Gently roll it around until completely covered with flour.
- Pinch off biscuit-sized pieces, lightly press with fingers on the floured surface, and gently flatten. Use your index finger to poke a hole in the center.
- Once all pieces are prepared, carefully place 2 or 3 in the hot oil. When you observe the edges turning golden, flip and fry until the other side achieves a similar golden hue.
- Drain the fried bread on paper towels.
- Your Mama's Kiowa Indian Frybread is now ready to be enjoyed!
Tips:
- Embrace the tradition of eyeballing measurements, adjusting ingredients until you achieve the desired consistency.
- Serve the frybread warm and fresh for the best flavor.
